I’m Bill Elzey with Showplace Lawns. How to
fix bad soil. Well a lot of times the soil will have no life in it. It is dry, no nutrient
value whatsoever. The best way to take care of that is to put a good compost and blend
it in. Till it in with your garden tiller or shovel it in with your shovel and mix it.
Again you might have to go over it a couple of times to get a good mix. You want to put
in about 25 to 30 per cent compost to soil. There are several good composts for this.
A turkey compost is really good. It is very high in nitrogen so you need to be careful
with that so you don’t use too much of it, just a thin amount each time you put it out.
Dairy cattle compost is ideal because of the rich diet of dairy cattle. Beef cattle compost
will work too. There is also some mushroom compost and with these composts what you would
do would be vary it. You would want to put one out now, next year put out a different
compost and the third year put out a different one again because each compost is going to
give you some different types of things to use to fertilize, not to fertilize but to
bring the life back to the soil.
