Alicia Intro (As-Live):
Thank you Laura, We’re at the Durham Public Library listening to a community conversation
about our youth and substance abuse within Durham and Middlefield. Let’s take a look
and hear what everyone had to say. [Take PKG] TOP NATS “i wonder if we could truly say,
without hesitation, the children are well…” Alicia VO:
DOZENS GATHER FOR A CANDID DISCUSSION ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ITS EFFECTS ON TEENS IN
OUR COMMUNITY… SOT: Betsy Dean
“it’s a great starting point to start talking about some of the issues that every community
has…” Alicia VO: (FULL SCREEN GRAPHIC)
WHILE STATISTICS SHOW SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN DURHAM AND MIDDLEFIELD IS RELATIVELY LOW COMPARED
TO NEARBY TOWNS… THERE IS STILL A NEED TO EDUCATE OUR YOUTH TO MAKE HEALTHY DECISIONS… SOT:
“after the decriminalization of marijuana, and now medical marijuana…there is a perception
that it is not harmful, and so that is something that we need to work on.” Alicia VO:
PARENTS, IN ATTENDANCE, SAY SUPPORT FROM COMMUNITY RESOURCES MAKES DEALING WITH A SUCH DIFFICULT
TOPIC A BIT EASIER. SOT:
“i think that the approach of working with the community.. working the families, rather
than ‘you can’t do this… you shouldn’t do this’ is a much stronger approach.” ***NATS**** Alicia VO:
AND WHILE THE DISCUSSION FOCUSED MAINLY ON TEENS– EXPERTS STRESS THAT IT IS NEVER TOO
EARLY TO TALK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL USE WITH YOUR KIDS… SOT:
“one of the number one things we can do as parents is make a very clear no use message…
‘ i do not expect you to use.. and there will be consequences..’ and be prepared to back
those up.” SOT:
“start early, talk often, have dinner together, get connected…” Alicia Tag (As-Live):
